Read yourself: The more reading goes on in the house, the more it becomes the norm. Invite him, ask if he wants to hear something interesting so you can read to him. Read in an animated, excited, way. We want to intrigue him strongly, to overcome the eye candy he sees on tv and in texts and internet. And choose important literature, not pap. Don't be coercive. Just seduce him into the joys of literature.

Adventure stories: Many boys don't enjoy reading, until they find the types of stories that really appeal to them. Talk with the librarian about good books for boys at this age. Ask your son what he is interested and look up books with those ideas. If he is interested in adventure, some books by gary paulsen are popular. Also, there are a series of books called "choose your own adventure". Look on-line.

Ask his teacher if : he is reading at grade level. If not, ask what services are available for assessment & help in school or by private tutoring. Read aloud to him every day & have him read aloud to you . Choose books that are of interest to him. Reward him for reading, both with praise & by having him earn " screen time" by reading first.
