Either will work: Anything warm or hot will help dilate and open up the clogged oil gland causing the stye. Either wet or dry will work. Typically we recommend damp/wet warm compresses as these are easier to make at home with hot water and a wash cloth. You could also place rice in a sock and place it in the microwave for 45 seconds. This will stay warm for up to 20 min, thus increasing heat to the stye. Good luck.
