That is his decision: You can protect yourself by setting limits such as not allowing him to smoke in your presence. You can discuss your concerns with him about the effect of second hand exposure on your health and the effects of smoking on his health. Ultimately, no matter how much you care and want him to make healthy choices - it is his decision.

You cannot control: It would be foolish to think that you can make someone do something like this. All you can do is set good boundaries for yourself. Nagging does not work. State clearly what you feel and what you see and why you are worried. If he does not stop then you can decide whether you want to stay in the relationship with him.

What you want: And what your boyfriend wants are 2 different things. At the same time, smoking is damaging to health, so what you want makes sense. You can't force him to do what he doesn't want to do, because it's his body, not yours -- just like he can't force you to like his smoking. There are many ways to help someone who has made the decision to stop smoking. Getting to that point is a process, though.
