Ck with your foot dr: You can't know a break or fracture for sure without an xray. However, your swollen toe has undergone some type of strain that needs to be evaluated further. In case it isn't a sprain, ; might be gout, the recommendations may be different.So, you want to make sure of the cause, and reduce the swelling to reduce pain. So, call your doctor so you can see what it is, and go from there.

You might: Have fractured your sesamoid. See a foot doc for xrays. (or ruptured the plantar plate).

Best way to confirm: Is by an xray, which your pcp or an er can do it for you. If its broken, you'll get referred to see an orthopod. Good luck.
