Whats hirschsprung disease?

Constipation: Hirschsprung's disease is one that occurs in utero. It is the failure of the large intestine to populate with the right nerve cells. The intestine has two systems. One causes contraction and one causes relaxation. This is the basis for perstalsis or the movement that propels material through our intestine. Hirschsprung's disease lacks the relaxing nerves thus colon is contracting and obstructing.

Aganglionosis: Hirschsprung disease has to do with lack of ganglion cells in bowel. In uterio there is migration of ganglion cells from proximal to distal. Interruption in this can cause short segment rectal, long colonic segment, and total aganglionosis of colon. Sometimes distal small bowel involved.Surgery usuallywith pull through of normal bowel at anus is usually peformed.Increased occurrence in down synd.
