Speed of rise varies: When a sudden jump occurs in the white count, it suggests acute inflammation like appendicitis. There will be a higher than normal lymphocyte count and many young lymphocytes called 'bands' seen in the differential. If the WBC climbs slowly, then there is not as many young immature wbc' seen in circulation.
