Please provide some do's and don'ts on living with polycystic kidney disease.

Ignore: Adult family members of patients with PKD should consider testing for the condition.

Ignore: Eat a low sodium/fat diet,increase exercise,don't smoke Don't ignore blood in the urine Find support.

Ignore: Like with any other renal disease, control your BP with a low-salt diet and reduce your risk of UTI.

Ignore: Periodic nephrology and radiolgic imaging. Periodic kidney and urinary analysis-daily exercise, diet.

Ignore: Do follow up with your nephrologist as recommended for best results.

Ignore: Avoid caffeine. Limit meat to less than 3 ounces per day. Avoid animal fat. Eat vegetables and fruit.

Ignore: At the first sign of bleeding or infection call your doctor.

Ignore: Protect your kidney health—treat high blood pressure and diabetes, and avoid ibuprofen products.

Ignore: Seek medical attention if you have flank pain, unexplained fevers or blood in your urine.

Ignore: Drink fluids generously (3 qts/day). Petition FDA and insurance companies to approve Tolvaptan.

Ignore: Avoid medications that are toxic to the kidney: NSAIDS (like motrin). Provide a good environment!

Ignore: Do: control BP;diet and exercise; f/u with nephrologist on a regular basis Don't: avoid all NSAIDs.

Ignore: Be sure that you do not have high blood pressure. Even normal kidneys will deteriorate over the years as a result of untreated hypertension.

If: If you have polycystic kidney disease, make sure your children are screened for it also.

Ignore: Talk to your doctor and consider getting an MRIMRA to look for brain aneurysm.

Ignore: Cut down on your salt intake, try to keep it below 3000 mg per day.

Ignore: Drink Plenty of water to try and slow down the progression of the disease.
