More details: An MRI is a 3d image of the heart and gives more precise information about pumping strength (called ejection fraction) and function of the heart muscle and valves. A cardiac MRI also can pick up much more detail about the heart muscle itself, including blood flow, inflammation and swelling, small areas of scar tissue, and other abnormalities of the walls of the heart that an echo can miss.
