No: Hyperplastic polyps do not become cancerous but adenomatous polyps may if they become large enough. They can always recur anywhere in the colon even at sites where a polyp was previously removed.

Colon polyps: Most colon polyps start off not being cancer, but can over the years turn to cancer starting at tip of polyp. Finding polyps early usually completely prevents cancer if the polyp is removed in time. That is why it is important to have routine colonoscopy.

Relax: Great majority of polyps are not cancer. Usually takes several years to develop cancer. Polyps>1 cm in size are most noteworthy. Most important colonoscopy is your first- to find polyps that developed over the decades. Should get follow up exams. Frequency depends on polyp number, size, type, family history. Discuss w/ md. Colonoscopy made headway in fight against cancer. Talk about diet, activity.
