Antispasmodic: Tanaflex is a medication that works to relieve muscle spasms. Although this will help treat the symptoms of the muscle spasm, it will not cure them. Once the medication is working, you may need to undergo physical therapy to appropriately treat the muscles that are in spasm.

You can: Zanaflex (tizanidine) is a muscle relaxant which is a perfectly fine option to treat back spasms. Like just about everything else in life and in medicine, we can't guarantee that a particular treatment will work, so if your problems persist then go back to your doctor to discuss further options.

Valium is also good: For spasms, valium 10 mg up to three times a day is also very effective, even if it is an older med.

Probably: Tizanidine (Zanaflex) is a well tested muscle relaxant. It may cause dizzy ness or lowering of blood pressure so be careful when changing positions from lying to standing. There is more compelling literature on Skelaxin (metaxalone) specifically in the treatment of low back pain. In my experience, Zanaflex works best in the small muscles of the neck, while Skelaxin (metaxalone) better in low back pain.
