Indirectly: The incidence of heart defects (chd) is dependent on a variety of genes on several chromosomes. Anyone with a specific cdh has about 4% risk of an offspring with some form of defect, though not necessarily the same defect. Two affected parents would have about 8-10% risk of some chd in an offspring. Some rare syndromes with chd have autosomal dominant inheritance and risk could be as high as 50%.

No: Although there are genetic syndromes and conditions where VSD is part of the syndrome, most are spontaneous anomalies and not heritable. There are a few genetic disorders that have VSD as part of the picture that can be inherited but there are other birth defects as well. Genome wide association studies have not been conducted in families with isolated VSD
