Typical course: Many cataracts develop with a thickening of the lens which adds minus power. This can occur at various rates and degrees and yours certainly is extreme. Cataract removal is highly successfuly and in addition will correct the basic power of your eyes. It sounds like you are ready for this. Discuss with your ophthalmologist.

Cause probably unkno: While we don't know what causes cataracts, age, and family history have something to do with it. Certain diseases such as diabetes, certain medications such as corticosteroids can be factors. Trauma is also a possibility. Certain types of opacity tend to progress more rapidly. Since you are getting more nearsighted rapidly, it sounds like it is the center of your lens that is getting more cloud.
