Treat the cause: They will clean the sore tissue and remove the irritants. If they think you have room for the tooth they will talk to you about cleaning it. If there is not enough room they may recommend removing the tooth. They may prescribe antibiotics.

Depends: Dentist will have to examine you to determine the best course of treatment. May need debridement (cleaning) or more intensive treatment. Is this the only area of problem, or are there others. Let your dentist make the treatment decision with you after examining you and determining what's needed.
