Gastritis or spasm: Sounds like a good reason to avoid the empty calories. Upper middle (/epigastric) discomfort from alcohol can be due to gastritis--when the stomach lining becomes irritated/raw/inflamed and painful when exposed to noxious substances; or could be an allergic-type response, causing esophageal spasm, which usually lasts 10-20 minutes per episode and is extremely uncomfortable. Try avoidance.
