A member asked:

The dr. from the ambulance prescribed amoxacilin just by listening to my lungs, i'm not feeling better, how did he know if it's a virus or bacteria?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Can't be sure: If you had a head cold and then developed a cough you could still have a viral bronchitis and not pneumonia. A chest xray would be needed to diagnose pneumonia with certainty. If pneumonia was present it could be bacterial, primary viral or mycoplasma. Other studies would be needed to be sure. Amoxicillin would treat some bacterial pneumonias but not viral or mycoplasma ones.
