Why do diabetics have to have their foot cuts seen by podiatrist?

Careful: Diabetics tend to heal slower than the normal population. A simple cut can turn into an infection and that infection can spread up the leg. Diabetics can also have neuropathy (numbness) which causes them not to realize they have a cut and it may get worse before they even notice it.

High risk: Diabetics are at higher risk for delayed healing, infection and other related conditions that make their foot a higher risk for limb loss.

Various factors: Diabetic patients often times will have poor circulation and a diminished healing ability which makes them more susceptible to developing foot infections. The presence of neuropathy is also a main contributor to the development of ulceration. If not treated promptly and appropriately, the foot ulcer can become infected, .
