Depends on the cause: First the cause of the numbness must be determined. A hand surgeon or orthopedic surgeon can make the diagnosis with a history and physical but may need an MRI or emg. The most common causes are carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome and a pinched nerve in the neck.

Varies: It really depends on the cause, as there are multiple potential possibilities. Things like carpal tunnel syndrome do have a pretty simple fix, whereas conditions like a sensory neuropathy do not but can be managed with medications, consider being seen. A nerve conduction test may also be of benefit.
