Liver Biopsy: Many chronic diseases of the liver are staged and graded based on the severity of changes seen under the microscope. The grade refers to the extent and severity of inflammation and the stage refers to the amount of scarring/fibrosis and the presence of cirrhosis. Specific diseases can have their own grading/staging criteria.
