It depends: There are many drugs that are usually used for general anesthesia. And therefore there are many way to divide the general anesthetics. However, the most basic way to divide is: intravenous (through the vein only) and inhalational to where a low percentage of a gas keeps you asleep. There advantages and disadvantages to each.

Types: Depends on the procedure, age, comorbidity, emergency: mask, laryngeal mask away, endotracheal tube. Intravenous anesthesia or anesthetic gas. Discuss with your surgeon and anesthesiologist.

GA means asleep: Ga is the catch-all term which means that you are completely unconscious, as opposed to sedation or regional techniques such as spinal or epidural. There are many different meds and airway management approaches used. That's why anesthesiology is its own field of medicine. Your physician anesthesiologist will explain which approaches might be used for your procedure, and select best meds for you.
