It depends: There are many drugs that are usually used for general anesthesia. And therefore there are many way to divide the general anesthetics. However, the most basic way to divide is: intravenous (through the vein only) and inhalational to where a low percentage of a gas keeps you asleep. There advantages and disadvantages to each.
