Early to bed: For adults, going to bed early usually results in a mid-sleep awakening. The body clock awakens you after slow-wave (deep) sleep drive has attenuated. Before the electric light, when people went to bed near sunset, mid-sleep awakenings were normal. After a period of quiet wakefulness, the waning clock makes sleep possible again in the early morning hours before dawn. Relax, read a book, and wait.
