High d-dimer: High d-dimer results can occur because of essentially inflammatory process. Besides blood clots, high results can be due to various causes: liver disease, high rheumatoid factor, inflammation, malignancy, trauma, pregnancy, recent surgery, and advanced age, to name a few. A high d-dimner is very non-specific. A low d-dimer is very help[ful in ruling out blood clots.
