Normal finding: D-dimer is a breakdown product that is produced when blood clots are formed and broken down in the bloodstream. A low number is completely normal, even if the laboratory is reporting that it is below a normal range. This blood test is frequently used to rule out a blood clot in the leg or in the lung. A low number is very reassuring that no blood clot is present.
