Ask the surgeon: The surgeon gives the patient an information sheet about the pain medications. The plan is to take the medication before the pain gets bad, so less pain will develop, and less pain medication will be needed. The patient is usually on tylenol (acetaminophen) and/or advil, plus a narcotic like hydrodocone or a non-narcotic like tramadol... And takes less as she improves. Sometimes pain-relieving eardrops can help.
