Herpes Vs Dermatitis: It would be odd for a herpes outbreak to last for more than a few days or weeks. Definitely not years. Herpes typically is a small cluster of blisters that as they age burst leaving raw red skin open to air and to pain.

Why?: What makes you think the dr's diagnosis is wrong? Please have 2nd opinion accomplished by a skin specialist, a dermatologist, who will make diagnosis based on physical findings and your medical history. Don't be surprised if 2nd opinion validates 1st opinion.
