Sounds normal: The first period(s) after an iud is inserted can be brutal. It can take 3-6 months to calm down. For most of us, this reliable, carefree method of birth control is worth the initial suffering. But if you have fever, abdominal pain, or abnormal/foul discharge, i'd be worried about infection, and i'd ask you to see a doc. If it's just cramps and heavy bleeding, Ibuprofen and a heating pad can help.

Normal: It's normal to have irregular bleeding 1) after having a baby, and 2) after putting in iud. Both the Mirena (levonorgestrel) and the paragard iud cause irregular bleeding after insertion. I would give it 3 weeks before seeing your doctor about possibly checking position of iud to make sure it's in the right place. Good luck!
