Can temporomandibular joint dysfunction influence eustachian tube dysfunction in such a way that swallowing causes loud painful crackling in the ear?

Not Usually: The ear can have some symptoms related to TMJ dysfunction, however, the ones you describe aren't likely. If you are having symptoms of TMJ dysfunction then that needs to be addressed. There is a crackling sound that can be heard and felt from the joint itself while opening and closing called crepitus. Yours still sounds like an ear issue. A different ENT evaluation may be in order.

Yes: If you check the web for symptoms of tmj/tmd, issues with the ears will usually be listed as an ailment associated with it. Popping, clicking and many other symptoms can originate from the jaw being out of alignment. My website, www.Jbassmantmj.Com lists some of the symptoms. I would first see an ENT dr. To rule out ear problems and then consider a tmj/tmd specialist.

No: Tmj disorders do not affect eustachian tube function. The loud painful cracking you experience is probably the tm joint cracking. See an ENT doc to make sure no ear problems.
