Depends: Bone marrow edema is a nonspecific (and usually mild) finding on mri. It can be caused by trauma or infection (or post surgical inflammation). If you haven't had surgery on your back (such as a spinal fusion), may reflect local injury or inflammation. Your expected course depends on the details of your history and the cause for you.
