Snowballing: The fact that you're waiting for a scs would suggest that there is not an otherwise 'surgical lesion' like an obvious herniated disc that would benefit from a traditional (and relatively benign) surgery. Chronic pain absolutely has a strong psychological component. Pre-surgical psych testing should be included for anybody prior to scs.
