pain on upper left back side of shoulder what causes it?

Muscle cramp: I guess, one of the major muscle on your upper back is sprained. I would advise you to apply ice pack and give rest to back muscle for few days. Then start with low intensity physiotherapy to strengthen the core body muscles. Good luck !
