Why does tendon on outside of leg from about 2 inch below to 6 inch above knee hurt, especially at night. had x-ray and nothing to see. sometimes limp?

Inflammation: The tendon is inflamed. Or it could be knee lateral compartment derangement which you can only see with MRI or ct.

Tendon pain: Regular xrays often do not show problems with soft tissue or ligaments. You should consult with an orthopedic surgeon to diagnosis your condition and give you advice on treatment. You may need more tests e.g. An MRI of the injured joint.
