Got celiac sprue?: "gluten intolerance" is loose term. Some people feel better cutting out foods containing gluten- grains, because they cut down on poorly digested carbohydrates, not because of lass gluten. True gluten disease needs a gluten free diet - for life. 18 months of a gluten filled diet won't cause irreversible damage.

When did it start ?: Gluten intolerance is a general label for people with problems triggered by gluten. In the worst form gluten triggers antibodies to gut tissues that cause a variety of tissue damage/symptoms. Thankfully, the gut tissue is forgiving & repairs itself if you quit building new antibodies with more gluten. Some are just intolerant to gluten like some break out to strawberries, but no real damage occur
