5 lb/wk is too much: Not going to the gym means not losing an extra few hundred calories a day. But, to lose 5 pounds a week (that's too much to aim for) means not going to the refrigerator, not going to the snack machine, not going to the starbuck's, not going to the.... It's best to aim for 1-2 pounds of weight loss per week, as realistic goals help with long-term success.
