Consider thalassemia: If your number of red cells is high or normal, but your hematocrit and/or hemoglobin are low, you may have thalassemia minor. That is a hereditary disorder which commonly causes mild anemia. It is more common among people of African, Mediterranean, or East Asian ancestry. It can be diagnosed by a blood test called hemoglobin electrophoresis.
