Thirsty for alcohol: Social drinking may occur because people are "thirsty, " but alcoholics drink for the alcohol, not for any sense of thirst in the usual sense. Alcohol dulls underlying pain, anxiety and depression, which returns (with a vengeance) when the alcohol wears off, and requires even more alcohol to push it down again. It is also addicting, and people get shakes, anxiety, sweats when they dont have alcohol.
