Pain-swelling-motion: An ankle that is sprained will be somewhat stiff and painful from swelling, and have varying degrees of decreased motion and ability to bear wright without a limp. Tenderness is usually limited to the zone of the actual sprained ligament. An ankle fracture should be more swollen and painful- likely directed at the bony site of the fracture. Bony tenderness and minimal improvement suggests fracture.

A fracture: And a break are essentially the same thing. A sprain is a soft tissue injury. Clinically, you can take an educated guess but an x-ray, ct scan or MRI would help make the diagnosis of fracture or break in the bone.

See a doctor: A sprained or fractured ankle can both demonstrate pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking. Getting an x-ray would be a first step.

Have it x-rayed.: You will need and x-ray to see if you have a fracture or if it is just a sprain. Have it evaluated by your physician to get the appropriate treatment.
