Ankle injury: A lot of the symptoms of sprain and fracture are similar involving pain, swelling, bruising and difficulty or inability to bear weight on the joint. The severity of the sprain may also make it difficult to distinguish from a fracture, and significant swelling can make it difficult to see a fracture on x-ray. If there is clear bony deformity or displacement a fracture is more likely.

X-ray: You will need and x-ray to see if you have a fracture or if it is just a sprain. Have it evaluated by your physician to get the appropriate treatment.
