Many options: There are many choices today to treat tmd/tmj problems. Both non surgical and surgical treatment have become more refined and evidence based meaning there is much more predictable outcomes while minimizing the risks involved with each treatment. Key is to find a skilled and experienced dentist who diagnosises and treats tmd's.

TMJ: Tmj ( or tmd) has multiple signs and symptoms. Without knowing more, here are some simple self help suggestions. Don't chew gum. Avoid hard crunchy foods. Don't open wide.Use moist heat over the jaw joints and muscles of the face. Taking an anti inflammatory medication, like ibuprophen 3 times a day for a week to 10 days. See a physical therapist and dentist trained in treating tmj.

A few ideas: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
