A member asked:

What could smoking do to the lungs on a micro level?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Many kinds of damage: The cells lining the respiratory tract have tiny little hairs (cilia) that beat and cause mucus to be constantly removed, and smoking stops these hairs from beating, causing mucus to accumulate, together with the tar and particles in the smoke. Cells start developing growth changes called metaplasia, becoming abnormal, which can ultimately lead to neoplasia or cancer.
