A member asked:

Can you tell me how could cataract surgery end up breaking the lens pocket in the eye?

Cataract: If you mean what can cause a tear in the capsular membrane that surrounds the natural lens during cataract surgery, the answer would be: many things. Cataract surgery is performed expertly by many careful and well-trained surgeons throughout the country, and we always try to avoid an unintentional tears in the capsule, especially posteriorly, but it can happen easily because it is so delicate.

Cataract Surgery:how: The lens: usually clear, behind iris & like a "pillow in a pillowcase". When cloudy/white & affecting vision, surgery needed. Goal: remove top part of pillow case (anterior capsule), remove pillow (cataract), keep back pillow case intact (posterior capsule), place a new lens; Goal: keep capsular bag intact; ultrasound tip can puncture/disrupt bag; More info: eyedoc2020.blogspot.com
