See correct dentist: This is from personal experience. See a dentist (usually an oral surgeon) that treats tmj. I was made a night guard that was firm but when it was placed in the mouth at body temperature become more pliable. So when you sleep and clench your teeth while sleeping the guard would take the pressure off of the joint. Apply moist heat to the joint and especially the muscles. Take anti-inflammatory meds.

Try this: http://tmj.org/ will give you advice. Best to see a TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
