A member asked:

I'm wondering why would someone with alzheimer's play checkers well but have a hard time holding a sensible conversation?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Memory functions: Alzheimer's does not affect all cognitive functions at the same pace, and may instead spare certain abilities for a while. Checkers likely involves more procedural memory, and may be preserved a bit longer. Conversation involves language, attention, executive abilities, and due to more complex and fluctuating interaction would be afflicted far more earlier.
