Black Hairy Tongue: There are many causes of black hairy tongue. As a general rule I have not seen many cases of black hairy tongue in my practice and have prescribed antibiotics for thousands of patients. Heavy tobacco and coffee drinkers are more likely to develop black hairy tongue, especially if they do not use a tongue scraper on a daily basis. It is common: Certain conditions can make people more likely to develop black hairy tongue. One of them is using antibiotics (which may disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in the mouth). Good oral hygiene, brushing, flossing and brushing your tongue usually ameliorates the condition.
