A member asked:

My mother and grandmother were both diagnosed with iron deficiency about 6 months ago. could it be hereditary?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: Bother your mother and grandmother are iron-deficient either because of diet or because they have blood loss. It is very difficult for a non-supplementing vegetarian to get enough iron, and if they have losses from hookworm, stomach or colon cancer, monthly loss, GI ulcers, or whatever, they'll become iron deficient as well. It's not a hereditary disease.
