The opioids: Are used primarily for the management of severe acute pain, pain associated with trauma or surgery, and pain associated with cancer. Because of the addictive and tolerance potential of the opioids, they are not used for chronic nonmalignant pain. In some patients, the use of an opioid drug alone may cause intolerable side effects or provide inadequate pain relief.
