Leary of addiction: Your doctor is trying to take advantage of some evidence that ssri-type anti-depressants, such as lexapro, and an snri, such as cymbalta, can diminish anxiety symptoms. The class of medications more effective at blocking anxiety are the benzodiazepines which include such well-known agents as xanax, (alprazolam) ativan, clonazepam, valium, librium... But they all carry the potential to be habit-forming.

What do YOU need?: You give a history of having overdosed on diazepam. The vast majority of people with anxiety do not need pills for it, and even these are best used to keep you functioning during turbulent times in your life. Talking about your life, learning new ways to cope by engaging with life's difficulties, new thought patterns, and possibly intervention in situations may work much better than a rx.
