Mite Type: Dogs can develop canine scabies caused by sarcoptes scabiei canis. People can be infected by sarcoptes scabiei hominis. Scabies infestations in wild animals ; other domestic animals come from different sarcoptes scabiei subspecies. To the best of my understanding mites of one subspecies will die fairly quickly when they attach to a different type of animal.
