Could a stroke always look like a large dark area on these scans?

Varies: The characteristics of a stroke appearance varies from a cat scan to an mri, and if bleeding is present, the appearance is very different also. Radiological textbooks describe the various appearances with illustrations. Perhaps your doctor could explain further.
