Xrays: Rib fractures usually begin ossifying within 6 weeks. By one year a callus is evident. If a fractured rib re fractures many times, a mal union or non union can occur. Evidence of previous healed or healing fractures can be seen on chest xrays or cat scans.

Rib fractures : It is possible to a broken rib for “years” as you stated. This is called malunion. I repair these in the operating room using a specialized titanium plate which bridges the rib and repairs the fracture.
