A member asked:

How do the muscles in an artery regulate bllod flow?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Arteries: There is smooth muscle within the walls of arteries. This muscular component is responsive to nervous system, hormonal and pharmacological stimuli. The muscle can contract (vasoconstriction) or relax (vasodilation). This results in either increased or decreased blood flow to a specific region. For example, after eating the arteries of the gut relax to increase blood flow for digestion.
