A member asked:

For someone placed on a mechanical ventilator, when is best time to check abg?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: It depends on the reason why the patient was placed on the ventilator in the first place and how they respond. Sometimes an abg is obtained only a few minutes after being placed on a ventilator (e.g. After an emergency intubation); often, an abg is not needed at all (e.g. Intubated for an elective procedure requiring general anesthesia).
